All our products are based on the client-server model where data is stored on a central server with client machines being used to test learners. If you have a network in your organisation then you already have the required infrastructure. Tests such as a the Sherwood Ability Screen can be web-delivered if required.

As with any piece of software you need to ensure that you have the correct equipment in place. If your PCs are less than five years old you should easily be able to run our range tests. If you would like to read the installation guide please visit the documentation pages.

Minimum hardware for test stations - the PCs you test learners on

  • Windows 7, Vista, XP, 2000, MAC OS X, Linux
  • Web Browser with the Adobe Flash Plug-in (standard on virtually all PCs)
  • Network Connection
  • Sound card and headphones*
  • 800x600 minimum screen resolution

*NB: In addition to each PC meeting the technical specifications you should ensure that each is equipped with a pair of headphones. This is essential as our tests make use of speech and sound within questions. These can be given out at the start of testing sessions and collected later. You should ensure that these give clear audible sound from each of the test stations.

Minimum hardware for administration stations - the staff PC, or PCs, you use for producing reports

Server recommendations

  • All versions ship with Microsoft SQL Server Express 2005 or 2008 as standard (free). With SQL Server Express you get the reassurance of SQL Server security, reliability and scalability if you don't already own the full version of SQL Server.
  • If you plan to test a large number of learners simultaneously or over a short period of time full versions of SQL Server 2000/2005/2008 and a full blown server OS are recommended, e.g. 2000/2003/2008 server. However you can still make use of SQL Server 2005 or 2008 Express Editions without any performance loss if you wish!

If you wish to web-deliver any of the Sherwood Test Series you will need a server with Microsoft IIS web server installed running the ASP scripting language. SQL Server can be running on the same or other remote server.

Network Operating Systems and transport protocols

  • All standard network transport protocols are supported

The diagram below shows how a typical testing network may look. To keep the diagram simple, only four test stations are shown.

If you think you are likely to require on-site help or a closer mentoring service please visit our consulting pages. We offer reasonable rates and cover a broad range of services. If you purchase one of our larger-scale packages then we visit on-site and carry out the installation for you. Plus half-a-days staff training is also given. Both are included in the price and cover the whole of the UK.
