Newbury College, Berkshire
Image of Newbury College logoNewbury has been in existence for over 50 years and currently has some 11,000 students and offers 1,300 courses. Around 700 students are in the 16-18 age range. They are a member of the Thames Valley Economic Partnership (TVEP).

Photo of learners at Newbury College taking the SAS“In previous years we have used the ALBSU test with all full-time students. By literally working 24 hour shifts we managed to turn results around in four or so weeks. The SAS is much faster by comparison. When we use the SAS for our next intake we plan to make use of some of the more advanced features, such as putting students’ reports on our intranet so that all members of staff can access them. We also plan to make use of the advanced import and export facilities so that we can share data with our college record systems.”

Diagram of the assessment workflow at Newbury College“Administration was certainly much easier than anything else we have tried and proved good value for the numbers we tested. We certainly don’t want to go back to paper-and-pencil! We’re glad we visited the Key Skills Support Programme website and learned about the virtues of the Sherwood Ability Screen.”

Newbury College

  • 600+ learners tested. Around 200 per week tested during early September
  • Students ranged from 14 to 65+ in age and went from Entry Level through to HND/Level 5
  • Utilised two rooms of networked PCs, with 40 or more being simultaneously tested by tutorial group
  • Central database using Microsoft SQL Server held all test and administration data
  • Reports were printed within 24hrs and were given to personal tutors. These were fed back to students within a week during tutorial sessions. Course tutors also received a copy of each report
  • Learners were tested in “Kiosk Mode” as they weren’t assigned a college ID by the time they were tested. Students selected their primary course so that they would be included on group reports
  • Individual learners took around 30 minutes to complete the test. A session typically lasted 60 minutes
  • One member of staff managed each testing session
